Bir Hosting Serüveni: İsimTescil'den Hostinger'e

My first endeavours with the Internet were to create my own unique things by tinkering with certain code samples. As every software enthusiast knows, these logical formations that addressed both the visual and functional side of the business were based on HTML, CSS and Javascript. Of course, it doesn't make sense to start from so far back, today's topic is a little more recent.

I created my first website with a structure where Fenerbahçe songs could be listened and downloaded, and as far as I remember, using the Weebly platform. At that time, of course, we were exploiting whatever was free and it was actually a very good site. It was practical. It was more widget-oriented and it was possible to create something even without knowing detailed coding. In the same period, I also did some work on Google Sites. The aim was to create something just out of curiosity. I even found its link.

Of course, this enthusiasm at a young age did not remain as it was. In 2013, I bought a hosting for the first time and started to create something in my own domain. At that time, the company that came in front of me and recommended in my researches with hosting was IsimTescil. In other words, that was the first time I met shared hosting.

IsimTescil journey

I bought a domain for my targeted work and connected it to the hosting I bought at IsimTescil. This work was Podoloji Turkiye, which is also active now, and I made updates on it many times. I tried myself, I created my own codes with what I learned. Working with your own storage makes you feel a little more free. It's like using a personal computer on the internet. You have no restrictions (supposedly). I learnt many web-based coding languages while shaping this work. Over time, I have shaped the work into the ideal structure it should be.

There is a situation like this in NameTescil systems. I initially used Plesk Panel in a Windows-based hosting structure. However, I switched to a Linux-based system because I had compatibility and performance problems with my work being Wordpress-based. Both the company officials themselves recommended this transition and my research on the internet wrote that it would be healthier. NameTescil provides the transition process and you need to take a backup beforehand. One thing I don't like is that some panel features that you can normally access are restricted by the server under the control of İsimTescil. For example, advanced PHP settings, server load limit settings, console screens, etc. This is of course not unique to İsimTescil. Many shared hosting vendors are targeting this. You already take these into consideration when choosing these hosting. But sometimes it can be annoying. You are temporarily trying to solve a restriction problem you encounter in your smallest business with the support line. This is a waste of time.

The first 5 years with IsimTescil were smooth, or so it seemed to me because I had no experience in other hosting. As a result, I continued to protect my work as long as I did not suffer any damage. In the infrastructure of IsimTescil, I always used the annual extension options as my packages ran out. As a result, I had active and working works and there was no very serious point that I was uncomfortable with. I thought my frequent access and server problems were 'normal' with my experience at that time.

My 9th year at IsimTescil

There are some titles that İsimTescil gives to its customers based on their membership period. These titles are just for show, so basically they don't earn you anything but vanity. In my 9th year, I already had the highest of these titles. But things have been a little different since then. To put it crudely, the company started to be 'crooked' in its service to me. Moreover, even though my work is being used in the same way and intensity. How? Let me explain.

In 2021, I needed a website for a business belonging to my family. Of course, since my experience was in IsimTescil, I decided to set it up here again. I did not buy a hosting, because my hosting for other projects already had support for up to 5 sites. So I was actually aiming to open my 2nd site using this area. Single hosting, 2 domains. As a matter of fact, I set up this plan in a very healthy way. I quickly installed my licensed theme from Themeforest and started to edit it.

Just 1 week later, when I tried to enter the site when I hadn't even fully filled in the content of my 2nd site yet, I received a warning. I encountered the warning screen for the first time and saw that the account was suspended. At first I thought it was temporary and waited a bit. But hours later, that error screen never went away. I never had access to the site. When I tried to check through cPanel, the situation was the same. So I wrote to the support team, which guarantees a response within 30 minutes. The funny part of the job starts here. What was shared with me was exactly as follows.

Dear Customer, Your project has been automatically suspended due to the detection of unusual resource consumption by the system on your Web Hosting package, which is managed with shared resources. Since excessive resource consumption affects all our customers using the same resource, the suspension process is applied to ensure the continuity of service on equal terms for our other web hosting customers using the same infrastructure with you and to prevent websites from being interrupted due to intensive resource consumption of another project. In other words, my new site, which does not even have visitors yet, contains 4 pages and 1 blog post, with a total of not more than 5 plugins, has exceeded the shared hosting limit set by IsimTescil and has been suspended. The funnier part is that this suspension is permanent. What do you mean? I can't even make a backup of my site because I didn't have access to the database or panels. When I shared that the suspension was unwarranted and told them to activate the site, I always got the same answer: "Upgrade your account to VDS servers". In other words, they were insistently forcing you to switch to a high package, and it doesn't matter if you've been their customer for 9 years. At the end of long tickets and phone calls, I could not save my site from being suspended. I said that I had to take a backup by informing that I would change the company and I wrote the following:

How can I exceed the data limit? Does the domain I bought on 04.11.2021 (lewisayak.com) exceed the data limit on your side before it has even completed 1 month? Moreover, I did not even advertise the site, it does not even have visitors. I only enter and create pages. I can't even enter the directory of the site and take a backup right now. Either undo the suspension or give me a backup of my site. I will change companies.

They opened access temporarily and I took all my backups. My whole adventure with IsimTescil ended with a black stain.

My introduction to Hostinger

As I have done many times before, I took another look at my research on the best hosting. The lists always included detailed reviews of many well-known companies. These were useful in making decisions, but even İsimTescil, where I had a bad experience, was always in the top 5 of these lists. Therefore, I lost confidence in them and turned to global companies by taking a little risk. In this regard, Hostinger was the one that caught my eye the most.

I moved my backup, which I had previously taken from İsimTescil, to a much more affordable hosting package of Hostinger. I say affordable because I bought a 4-year package by paying 25% more than the amount I paid to İsimTescil for 1 year. Moreover, SSL, domain and other features are included in the package. Considering that these features were charged separately in İsimTescil, I was very profitable. I left only my domain in İsimTescil for now.

Hostinger's Wordpress compatible package allows you to manage the cPanel infrastructure through its own Hostinger Panel. Although it seems complicated at first, this panel is very useful contrary to what I expected. I was managing my settings here myself, which I solved after hours with a ticket at İsimTescil. I was quite free compared to a shared hosting about what I wanted to customise. Although it is global, having a Turkish interface is also a plus. So how was the performance of my site on Hostinger?

Flight on Hostinger

When I got my site in good shape, I started to observe things that I was surprised. My site with the same structure was incredibly fast compared to the one in NameTescil. For example, it took me seconds/minutes to open, edit and save an Elementor page in İsimTescil. With Hostinger, it's as fast as opening and closing a folder on your computer. I was able to move things along very quickly and very easily. I bought a few premium add-ons and yes, I had a perfectly functional site. I wasn't getting any complex errors, it worked very well with my infrastructure.

WordPress has a page where it analyses the site status. This page is called "Site Health". I was constantly getting errors in this section in İsimTescil. Even if I thought about all of them, 1-2 of them always remained, and this was the case in all my WordPress work. In other words, it was certain that İsimTescil had a compatibility problem with WordPress, or at least in the package I was using. When I checked the same page on Hostinger, there was no error. It has been close to 6 months since I moved the site. Still no more. This shows that Hostinger is a very good choice.

Conclusion

It is very important to take risks, try and experience for a business. Using different infrastructures and evaluating the work from different windows adds experience to people. When I stayed with İsimTescil for 9 years, I never gave up despite frequent server errors and access problems. This fanaticism nowadays makes me feel that I am a 'sucker'. Of course, being national has its advantages; but the vision of the company is far away from being the old İsimTescil. It is best to continue with those who do their job right. I think you should take a risk too.
